The setting is disabled by default. If you take no action, you are thereby tacitly accepting regional storage starting December 14, 2026. For Swiss companies with requirements regarding data location, this item now needs to be added to their to-do list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-are-the-new-settings-about\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the New Settings About?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the \u201cStore Microsoft 365 customer data in-country\u201d setting, organizations can choose between two options: Customer data remains in the tenant\u2019s country (i.e., Switzerland), or Microsoft may store it regionally within the EU Data Boundary. Microsoft justifies this move by citing the need to ensure a high-performance infrastructure within the EU\/EFTA region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> In both cases, the data does not leave the EU Data Boundary. There are no changes to the commitments regarding data protection, security, compliance, and encryption. A 90-day review period begins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Through December 14, 2026:<\/strong> The data location remains unchanged \u2013 regardless of the setting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Starting December 14, 2026:<\/strong> The selected setting takes effect. If it is still disabled, Microsoft may store the data regionally within the EU Data Boundary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-which-countries-and-microsoft-services-are-affected\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which Countries and Microsoft Services Are Affected?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tenants in Switzerland, Germany, France, Norway, and Sweden are affected. The setting applies to Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Copilot, and Microsoft Copilot Chat \u2013 in other words, for practically all services that contain business data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-potential-pitfall-data-transfer-can-take-up-to-six-months\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Potential Pitfall: Data Transfer Can Take Up to Six Months<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The setting can be changed at any time, even after the deadline. However, anyone who enables in-country storage only after December 14, 2026, must expect the data to be transferred back. According to Microsoft, this can take around six months. Anyone who needs data to be located in Switzerland (for example, due to regulatory requirements, customer contracts, or their own ISMS) should therefore make this decision before the deadline and not wait until an auditor asks about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-to-do-list-for-it\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">To-Do List for IT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Check settings:<\/strong> In the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, go to Settings > Org settings > Organization profile > Data location > Commitments to verify the current status<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clarify requirements:<\/strong> Consult with compliance, data protection, and senior management to determine whether the Switzerland data location is required by contract or regulation (e.g., FINMA regulations, customer contracts, ISO 27001 context)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decide and document:<\/strong> Consciously enable the setting or leave it disabled \u2013 and record the decision, including the rationale, in the documentation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Meet the deadline:<\/strong> Make the adjustment by December 14, 2026, at the latest, to avoid the six-month rollback<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not sure which setting is right for your company?
